Teenage Wasteland

Mathew is tall and plucks away at his guitar
He is use to girls gathering around him
His favorite song is “Baba O’ Reilly”
He hits the high notes okay
I have been in love with Mathew for ten years
He can’t commit and rarely returns emails
Tonight he is playing his guitar
And some twenty-six year old is falling in love with him
She sways back and forth
Occasionally sipping at the pale ale she grasps in her tiny hands
All her tomorrows are discovered in his luring performance
He glances at her with his grinning green eyes
He pretends to be shy
Tonight Mathew is having a backyard jam session
All his friends are there
White Christmas tree lights line the fence and trees
Creating some faux Winter Wonderland
Tonight some girl is falling in love
Tonight Mathew plays his best Peter Townsend
Tonight I am waiting by the phone
Checking my emails
NOTHING
Tonight Mathew is playing his guitar
Tonight some girl will take the plunge
I tell myself that I am better off
Tonight some girl is about to fall
Just as hard as I fell one summer night so long ago
Down
Down
DEEP Down
Lost in lust, guitar chords, and the faltering notion
Of some tall man
Playing “Baba O’ Reilly”
